Has the “Stop Trump” Plan Been Hatched?

Perhaps you heard the news that Jeb Bush met with Cruz, Rubio and Kasich on Wednesday in Florida prior to the debate last night. If Erick Erickson is to be believed, they have hatched a “stop Trump” plan. It all comes down to this:

1. Marco Rubio gets Florida
2. John Kasich gets Ohio
3. Ted Cruz gets Illinois, Missouri and North Carolina

Basically they’ve agreed to stay out of each other’s way in going for those states. Rubio has publicly stated that plan.

“John Kasich is the only one who can beat Donald Trump in Ohio,” Rubio said. “If a voter in Ohio is motivated by stopping Donald Trump, I suspect that’s the only choice they can make.”

The flip-side of that strategic gambit is to convince any voters in Florida not backing Trump to support him in Tuesday’s primary.

“I’m the only one who can beat Trump in Florida,” Rubio said during a press conference Friday morning at Temple Beth El.

Erickson is reporting that Cruz is pulling his ads and appearances in Florida and Kasich is doing the same in Illinois.

What is important to keep in mind is that the Republican primary has now entered the phase where these states are winner-take-all. If this is – in fact – the plan, success would deny Trump any delegates in these 5 big states.

These guys have spent the last few months tearing into each other. Is it possible that there is any trust left among them to actually conspire together to stop Trump? We’ll see.
