UPDATING OUR POLITICAL DICTIONARIES.... Josh Marshall had a very short item the other day that I've been meaning to mention. He was helping readers understand the new political "lexicon."

"Jamming it through": to vote on a bill.

It got me thinking about how we should all update our understandings of political terms that had fairly straightforward definitions up until fairly recently.

"Obstructionism," for example, only refers to Democratic minorities opposing Republican proposals.

"Tyranny" is found when an elected Democratic majority passes legislation that Republicans don't like.

"Reconciliation" describes a Senate process that Republicans are allowed to use to overcome Democratic "obstructionism."

"Terrorism" refers to acts of political violence committed by people who aren't white guys.

"Bipartisanship" is found when Democrats agree to pass Republican legislation.

"Big government" describes a dangerous phenomenon to be avoided, except in cases relating to reproductive rights or gays.

"Treason" refers to Democrats criticizing a Republican administration during a war.

"Patriotism" refers to Republicans criticizing a Democratic administration during a war.

"Fiscal responsibility" is a national priority related to keeping our deficit in check, which only applies when Republicans are in the minority.

"Parliamentarian" is a seemingly independent official on the Hill who Senate Republicans are allowed to fire when the GOP disapproves of his/her rulings.

See how fun this is? Consider this an open thread for your own submissions.

Liberate - the act of illegally invading a sovereign nation against the will of the native population, leading to the violent deaths of over one million citizens, while also systematically stealing their precious petrol resources.

Terrorist - Anyone in Iraq who objects to the illegal U.S. military presence, including "liberated" Iraqi citizens, who represent over 90% of the alleged "terrorists" attacking U.S. forces.

Democracy - A puppet government, which agrees to cater to U.S. corporate interests while repressing the native population. See: U.S. Democracy promotion in South and Central America since WWII.

Foreign Fighters - Also known as Iranian Terrorists, regardless of what country they actually come from (mostly Saudi Arabia). The United States occupying force does NOT fall under the definition of "foreign fighter".

Defeat - caving to the will of the Iraqi people, the American people and the will of the overwhelming (over 90%!) majority of the population of the entire world. Defeat also means respecting international law, by removing an illegal occupying force, which waged a war of aggression in violation of the Geneva Convention and the U.N. Charter.

Surrender - respecting international law and the will of the Iraqi people. See: defeat

Victory - continuing to occupy the sovereign nation of Iraq against the will of the population (91% want us to leave within a year!) and the will of the overwhelming majority of the world. Most importantly, victory entails creation of a puppet "democracy," which will cater to American multinational corporations by, among other things, passing a new oil law that will essentially give American and British oil company’s enormous guaranteed profits in perpetuity. Victory also means bombing Iran and installing another "democracy" (see: definition above).

"Support The Troops" - a saying meant to quiet any real discussion of a war policy. Used by every war-mongering nation in history, including the Nazis, the term has proven effective in silencing war critics that were hell-bent on defeat and surrender (see definitions above). Whenever logic is thrown at a war-mongering neo-con, one can safely invoke this saying, which will immediately end the discussion.

September 11th - nationalistic go-to date that represents any war-mongering endeavor our government seeks to initiate. It is NOT to be used in reference to the September 11th, 1973 CIA backed coup in Chile that overthrew a democratically elected government and replaced it with a ruthless dictator, who installed his own "democracy" (see definition above). Additionally, the date can be used to describe any and all threats, real or imagined, regardless of whether they have any connection whatsoever to the 9/11 attacks in the States. Most importantly, the date must be invoked as often as possible in place of honest political discourse (see: any Rudy Giuliani speech).

Economy - corporate profits. DO NOT think it has anything to do with the economic growth for the average American, whose inflation adjhusted growth has stagnated for the past thirty years.

Entitlements - any policy that helps people without giving enormous profits to the wealthiest members of society. The term DOES NOT apply to the enormous corporate tax subsidies and grants.

Defense Industry - tax subsidized (estimated 30% tax subsidy) war-profiteering machine.

Values - whatever issue gets the sheep out to vote against their true interests or the interests of the overwhelming population of the planet. See: Gay marriage

Influence - corporate control of natural resources. Also known as "regional stability".

Interference - generally used to describe activities, whether real or imagined, by the next enemy on the list in whatever country the United States is occupying. DO NOT use the term to describe the United States illegal meddling in the affairs of other nations, including massive invasions like Iraq.

Dictator - this derogatory term can only be used to describe world leaders who are NOT acting as puppets to U.S. corporate interests. Don’t be confused if the term is used to describe leaders elected in free and fair elections around the globe, as the will of native populations is irrelevant (see: Hugo Chavez) in determining whether one is to be labeled a dictator. DO NOT use the word to describe true dictators who happen to be in the U.S. pocket (see: Egypt, Saudi Arabia etc)

Socialism - G.O.P.- speak for any attempt to help the less fortunate. Most importantly, it applies to any initiative which promises to help citizens by removing the financial ‘cut’ that must be paid to our wealthy overlords, mob style.

Socialized Medicine - any plan that increases coverage and provides better care in a more efficient and cost-effective manner, but does so by taking the profit out of the hands of the Insurance and Pharmaceutical industry coffers, making it therefore 'undesirable' to our corporate overlords. One must always invoke the French system with contempt, but also carefully avoid the fact that the World Health Organization ranks the French system #1 in the world in overall care. Additionally, and most importantly, make sure you imply that the government will be providing the health care with these plans, as opposed to merely paying the same doctor you currently use for his or her services. It is also essential that you talk about the dreaded "raised taxes" when applied to this topic, ignoring that it will actually cost citizens less per capita than the current system, as it does in the rest of the Western world.

Judicial Activism - A ruling by the judiciary which overrules an unconstitutional action by the legislature or executive branch, as is its mandate under the U.S. Constitution. Note: this only applies to rulings which the wing-nut disagrees with.

"A Nation of Laws" - A slogan used to describe the conditions for those in the general population. NOT TO BE APPLIED to high ranking political criminals.

Bailout - The act of socializing the risk of the market system to the population-at-large, while privatizing the profits. It involves massive taxpayer-funded cash giveaways to treasury-robbing criminals, who claim to be conservatives, but merely served to rape and pillage the nation's coffers for the good of a small, wealthy elite, in what amounts to an enormous pyramid scheme, which is doomed to fail as the bulk of the population reaches the point where they can no longer perform as good consumers (their only acceptable function); instead succumbing to massive debt and joblessness.

"Class Warfare" is any effort by the non-rich to claw back any of the money sucked out of the Treasury by enormous tax cuts for the rich. The term cannot be used to describe the original tax cuts that impoverished the Treasury and the citizenry.

Torture: Waterboarding, stress positions, exposure to extreme heat and cold, when committed by persons of color with names like Ahmed, especially against Americans.

Enhanced interrogation techniques: Identical to above, except that it is performed by Americans against persons of color with names like Ahmed.

Keeping Us Safe: Any activity that should not be examined if the examination is likely to lead to criminal charges against any member of the previous administration (see above, "enhanced interrogation techniques.")

Suicide: The act of binding one's own hands and feet with duct tape, jamming rags down one's own esophagus and then hanging one's self. A form of terrorism or asymmetrical warfare. If this happens to follow immediately upon a session of enhanced interrogation techniques, there is absolutely no relationship between the two events.

I don't understand exactly what you are getting at beyond the inexorable power of compound interest. I am not sure private industry can sustain a growth rate of 4% per year indefinately. Economies, especially uncontrolled economies, move forward in fits and starts. To smooth out the rate of growth to your hypothetical 3 to 4% implies a level of command control leaders of the old Soviet Union would envy. The biggest problem you have is your notion of the "corrupt poor." The goal should be to empower every one in the society to achieve success. Creating a few hundred Warren Buffets might seem attractive, but there are hundreds of millions of us.

"Against" - the opposed must have conservative reasons for objecting to that which conservatives do not like. However see e.g. Niemanwatchdog, where we find that if the people who are opposed to the current bill because it doesn't go far enough are included, then a majority of Americans are for health care reform even if not this bill.

For Democrats, it refers to the option to emigrate to a socialist sharia-loving country in marxist fascist Europe if they don't appreciate the afore-mentioned Republican freedoms, as in "if you hate America so much, you have the freedom to not let the door hit your ass on the way out."

"Mission": any self-promoting photo-op that will lead the weak-minded to believe an historic goal has been fully achieved by Republicans, as in "mission accomplished." When used by Democrats, it refers to facilities in the heavily Democratic voter areas (aka "slums") where ACORN recruits its operatives, as in "rescue mission."

"Bipartisan support" (Republican-style)...getting legislation in the U.S. Senate passed on an up-or-down vote, barely getting just over 50 votes, with the help of Blue Dog Democrats crossing party lines...with very few, if any, Democratic Party proposals (besides Blue Dog proposals) making it into final legislation. (see Iraq War Authorization, Bush Tax Cuts (twice), and numerous other country-damaging Republican/Blue Dog Democrat-passed laws during the infamous Bush/Cheney years).

"Bipartisan support" (Democratic-style)...Democrats blocked in the U.S. Senate from enacting desperately-needed country-helping legislation by a Republican/Blue Dog Democrat bloc, with extensive Republican use of (or in actuality just the threat of) the filibuster to make 60 votes necessary to even get to an up-or-down vote on the floor, with Senate Republicans voting en masse against any and all Democratic Party proposals...while Democrats include Republican and Blue Dog Democrat proposals in legislation, neutralizing and compromising said legislation, in the faint (misguided? delusional? pie-in-the-sky?) hope of getting non-existent Republican support. (see over 290 bills passed in the House and awaiting Senate action, healthcare reform, TARP, re-regulation of the financial sector, climate change legislation, the recent blocking by Senate Republicans and Senate Blue Dog Democrats of the Obama proposal to supplement senior citizen pay with a $250 COLA...just to name a few).
