Day’s End and Night Watch

A long day of historical reminiscences and ongoing political battles.

Here are some final items:

* Cloture for Gina McCarthy confirmation at EPA passes 69-31; actual confirmation passes 59-40 (with one Democrat, Joe Manchin (D-Coal) voting nay). Much better margins than with Perez, but let’s wait until the NLRB votes to see if “deal” sticks.

* House GOP formally abandons legal defense of remaining statutes discriminating against same-sex marriage partners.

* City of Detroit formally files for Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection.

* Greg Sargent notes new polls showing “path to citizenship” not deal-breaker for large majority of self-identified Republicans.

* At Ten Miles Square, Rob Atkinson argues that high-skill immigration liberalization should not be allowed to die if larger immigration bill expires.

* At College Guide, Daniel Luzer reports San Jose State hitting “pause” button on its much-discussed MOOC experiment.

And in non-political news:

* American Horror Story and Game of Thrones top Emmy nominations, but House of Cards breaks ground with nine nominations for show delivered online.

I didn’t have the news hooks to post other songs of and about the Spanish Civil War, so let’s end with an assortment. First, the Spanish anarchist anthem, “A las barricadas!”

Next up, the Falangist anthem, “Cara al Sol” (complete with propaganda stills, including one shot of the Falangist leader and supposed author of the anthem, Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera):

And finally, an interesting electric guitar rendition of “El Himno de Riego,” the Spanish Republican anthem, along with many images of the Republic’s defenders in the war.
