I’m blogging from SFO and getting ready for a few days of not writing about, reading about, or if possible even thinking about politics. I’m taking along a book about the origins of World War I, but that’s about as close to current affairs as I want to get.
We’re pleased to announce that Martin Longman–a.k.a. The BooMan of the highly-regarded Booman Tribune blog–will be at the controls of PA tomorrow, Friday and Monday. Please welcome him warmly, dear readers.
Here are some remains of the day:
* U.S. Chamber publishes open letter to House GOP asking it to reconsider Obamacare defund/delay demands.
* At TAP, David Cay Johnston reviews new book on links between Tea Party and longstanding efforts of very rich to reduce their own taxes.
* Department of Labor makes it clear private retirement plans should recognize legal same-sex marriages for purposes of determining spousal benefits.
* New PPP survey of NH for 2016 GOP presidential contest shows Rubio losing two-thirds of support since April, and Paul down 8 points as well, with Christie, Cruz and Jebbie Bush moving up.
* At Ten Miles Square, Jonathan Bernstein examines differences between 1995 shutdown threats and today’s. Biggie: House GOPers should know better this time.
* At College Guide, Daniel Luzer provides some additional data on athletic department expenses and profits in comment on Louis Barbash’s argument for paying college athletes.
And in sorta non-political news:
* Dow and S&P hit historic highs after Fed announces it’s not “tapering” just yet.
Okay, that’s it for today. Let’s close our musical commentary on newspapers today with John Fogerty performing “Headlines” in 1986.

Selah.
