I’m blogging from Georgia this week, from various locations (right now a fast food restaurant), and with some personal and family chores mixed in, but I’ll try to keep the schedule as regularly as possible.
Here are some non-fast-food midday news/views snacks:
* In 7-2 decision, with Thomas and Alito dissenting, SCOTUS upholds EPA’s power to regulate greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act.
* As part, I am sure, of the conservative “voter fraud” attack on Thad Cochran, Breitbartians are making big deal out of Biloxi campaign staffer being arrested for stealing McDaniel signs.
* TNR’s Brian Beutler notes that deliberate lies about Obamacare provisions (e.g., “death panels”) are putting lives at risk among people frightened to access new benefits.
* At The Atlantic, Peter Beinart blames Obama for failing to put pressure earlier on al-Maliki government to implement power-sharing promises with Sunnis.
* Greg Sargent notes that in efforts to exploit recent border crossings by Central Americans, GOP is in danger of taking a “deport everybody” posture.
* Rand Paul accuses Obama administration of “arming ISIS” by its backing for Syrian rebels.
And in non-political news:
* A thorough assessment of how U.S. might–or might not–make it out of Group play in the World Cup.
As commenter dbuck12 noted this morning, famed Cajun musician Jimmy C. Newman died over the weekend. As we break for lunch, here’s Newman performing his signature song, “Alligator Man.”
