GANGING UP ON ENERGY….I missed this last Friday while I was off at the fair eating deep-fried food, but apparently there’s a bipartisan energy bill on the table that’s cosponsored by a “Gang of 10” — a group of five Democratic senators and five Republican senators. Among other things it includes some limited offshore drilling, and Obama’s mild support for the Gang’s plan is what prompted the cries of flip flopping from the McCain camp last week.
In any case, it’s a fairly modest proposal, but McCain opposes it because it closes some tax loopholes and therefore increases taxes on oil companies. Can’t have that, can we? The public, however, might feel differently, and Steve Benen outlines why Obama might be smart to be a little more vocal in his support for the plan.
