No matter what training someone has, sometimes the jobs still just aren’t there. While going back to school seems like a good way to help improve job prospects, further training doesn’t guarantee real employment.

According to an article by Frank Schultz in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

The new marketing slogan for Blackhawk Technical College is designed to link its classrooms to jobs. “We are future-makers,” it says. But the future is not what it used to be. Not in this economy. Not for every job seeker.

Job-placement numbers from the college’s annual survey of graduates don’t look too bad at first glance. In some programs, 90% or more of graduates have found jobs. But the most recent statistics are for 2009 grads. Numbers for this year won’t be out until next spring.

Despite extensive retraining, many new Blackhawk graduates still haven’t found jobs, probably because the jobs simply don’t exist.

According to one career center coordinator at Blackhawk, many graduates find that they have to move in order to find available jobs. And that’s not the sort of retraining anyone wants to do.
