Apparently the University of Maryland now has its own eating club. But despite the fact that UMD has become more expensive recently (students faced a 4.5 percent fee increase this year), it’s not one of those eating clubs. You know, the fancy social kind they have at Princeton.

Not quite. According to an article by Jenna Johnson in the Washington Post:

College students have organized clubs for everything. Everything. And here’s the latest example: A group of University of Maryland students have started a competitive eating club.

The group started as a joke a couple years ago: A group of friends realized they had tons of credits left on their meal plans that they didn’t want to go to waste. “So we’d just buy 20 pizzas and all these chicken fingers and devour it all,” founder Keith Solomon told AOL [which originally reported the story].

The trouble is that it’s not really competitive eating if there’s no competition. Maryland actually has the only collegiate-level competitive eating group in the United States.

I guess that makes them the national champions. [Image via]
