New York’s governor, Andrew Cuomo, promises that he won’t allow tuition at the state’s public universities to increase. According to an article in the Auburn Citizen:
Gov. Andrew Cuomo says he is rejecting any increase in tuition at the public universities.
The State University of New York has sought the authority from Albany to increase tuition in part to contend with a 30-percent reduction in state aid over the last three years. But Cuomo on Tuesday announced his opposition to a tuition increase in his 2011-12 budget presentation.
No tuition increases. How promising. Not really.
Part of the reason the legislature, and some SUNY officials, want to raise SUNY tuition is that the state isn’t giving them much money to operate next year.
Cuomo, who vowed in his campaign not to raise taxes, does not indicate that his administration plans to give SUNY any more money that they might use to, say, render tuition hikes unnecessary.
