College tuition didn’t increase as much this year as in prior years. According to a survey released yesterday by the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, “tuition and fees at the nation’s private colleges and universities rose 3.9 percent for the 2012-13 academic year.” That’s the lowest rate increase in four decades.

This is welcome news, but something else happened for the first time this year. According to Ted Reimers of CampusGrotto this is also the first time that “a college has passed the $60K per year mark in total cost (tuition + room and board + required fees).”

While apparently some 74 colleges now charge students over $55,000, Sarah Lawrence College now has the dubious distinction of being the first institution in the United States that sets students back more than $60,000 annually. The total cost of Sarah Lawrence is $61,236 for the 2012-13 school year.

The next most expensive school, New York University, now costs $59,837 a year.
