The Washington Monthly has had a pretty big impact on my life. Prior to my web-editing and Political-Animaling days, it was my first full-blown journalism internship, and I have fond memories of doing fact-checking and research for wonderful editors like Zach Roth and Rachel Morris (both of whom, in Monthly tradition, spend a couple years as editors before moving on to bigger outlets). I was given substantive work to do, despite my lack of experience (and arguably ability) at the time, because there wasn’t really a choice: the Monthly is a scrappy, perpetually understaffed magazine that requires an avalanche of work from editor and intern alike. But it’s that work ethic and sense of shared purpose that explains how the Monthly continues to put out great, insightful journalism at a time when great and insightful journalism is an endangered species.
All of which is my mawkish way of asking you to donate before the end of the year. It’s tax-deductible and will go directly to funding more of the journalism and commentary you like, from Political Animal to feature stories.
