Yes, it’s that time again! The Monthly is currently hosting its annual, end-of-the-year fundraiser. We’re asking you, the readers, to pitch in and give what you can to support the work we do.
As readers know, the Monthly is by now a Washington, and an American, institution. We’ve been publishing high-quality, highly influential public affairs journalism since 1969. We’re proud of that tradition, but we can’t continue without your help.
The Monthly does so much important work that is worthy of your support. For decades, it has been publishing groundbreaking investigative journalism, such as this important story earlier this year. It has long been a place where talented young writers could land an internship, learn the ropes, and start on the path to becoming distinguished journalists. James Fallows, Taylor Branch, Tim Noah, Joe Nocera, and Suzannah Lessard are just a few of the writers who got their start at the Monthly, or who wrote for the Monthly early in their careers.
Unlike some of the stodgier political magazines, the Monthly, to its great credit, jumped into the internet age feet first. Its blogs, particularly Political Animal, have long been important voices in the conversation in the liberal blogosphere. Ed Kilgore, our main blogger at Political Animal, brings a lifetime of in-the-trenches political experiences to deliver the kind of hard-won insights you won’t find anywhere else. Last year, one of the most respected voices of the liberal blogosphere, Digby, wrote of Ed, “I read everything he writes and have for years and quote him liberally.”
But to enable Ed to do what he does full-time, and to fund the Monthly’s long-form journalism, its College Guide, and the rest of the important work we do, it costs money.
