While I was visiting Lake Superior last week this song by Dan Fogelberg was on my mind. It tells a lovely story, but the thing that has always impressed me about it is that you can feel the motion of the water and the waves in the music.

For those of you who are not sailors – the nautical definition of reach is: “a point of sailing in which the wind is within a few points of the beam.”

As the coastline recedes from view
And the seas swell and roll
I will take from the reach
All that she has to teach
To the depths of my soul
