WHO’S IN CHARGE TODAY?….As near as I can tell, our postwar Iraq timeline looks something like this:
-
First, the Pentagon is in charge, with ex-general Jay Garner plucked from retirement by Donald Rumsfeld to become de facto ruler of Iraq.
-
Then, the Department of State gets into the action when Paul Bremer is put in charge. He still reports to the Pentagon, but Bremer is a State guy.
-
Today, both State and Defense are sidelined as Condoleezza Rice is put in overall charge of postwar planning in both Iraq and Afghanistan.
So we’ve tried the Pentagon, we’ve tried the State Department, and now we’re going to try the White House. What’s next if that doesn’t work?
