The state Attorney General`s office on Friday charged [former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry] Sandusky, 67, with 40 counts related to the sexual abuse of children after a two-year investigation. Sandusky, a Washington County native, once was considered a possible successor to head coach Joe Paterno, who holds the NCAA record for Division I football victories.
In addition, Penn State Athletic Director Tim Curley, 57, and Gary Schultz, 62, senior vice president of finance and business who oversees the university police department, are charged with failing to report the suspected crimes and lying to a grand jury.
Schultz and Curley resigned Sunday and this morning posted bail, set at $75,000. Paterno, the football coach with the most wins in Division I wins in American history, wasn’t charged with any crimes.

According to a grand jury presentment, Paterno told Curley of an allegation against Sandusky brought by a graduate assistant who said he witnessed a sexual act between Sandusky and a boy. Paterno… released a statement yesterday describing the nature and number of charges as “very shocking.”
Sandusky is accused of sexually abusing eight boys over 15 years through a charity he ran, The Second Mile. The organization “plans, organizes, and offers activities and programs for [low-income] children to promote self-confidence as well as physical, academic, and personal success.”
Sandusky retired from Penn State in 1999 but he apparently was allowed to use Penn State facilities for his charity.
Much earlier in his career, Sandusky was defensive end when he attended Penn State from 1963 to 1965. Paterno was his coach.
