Recent Syracuse University graduate and Fulbright recipient Stephen Barton was wounded in the massacre in Aurora, Colo. in July. This week, he’s talking about gun violence in a 30-second television advertisement. He’s deferred his fellowship to teach English in Russia, and he’s joined Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a coalition of mayors advocating for stricter controls on firearms.

The presidential candidates are debating tonight in Denver, not far from the cinema. Jim Lehrer or one of the candidates may say a few words about the tragedy tonight. A more appropriate memorial would be a serious discussion about the damage done by the availability of guns in our society, though we aren’t likely to hear that during the debate.
