The nation’s response to the Sandy Hook school shootings is beginning to materialize less than a week after the fact.

Today, Attorney General Eric Holder is expected to travel to Newtown to meet with local law enforcement officials and investigators looking into the killings.

Meanwhile, the NRA plans on holding a “major” press conference on Friday, where, according to POLITICO, it will offer “‘meaningful contributions’ to ensure that the tragic shooting in Newtown, Conn., ‘never happens again.’”

Wayne LaPierre, CEO of the NRA, is also slated to appear on NBC’s “Meet the Press” this Sunday.

On the Presidential gun violence commission front, TIME’s Mark Halperin said today that VP Joe Biden — picked by the President to lead the task force — can command the respect of Republicans if he wins over law enforcement groups “as they were marshaled by him when he was chairman of the Judiciary Committee.”

If Biden is looking for a knowledgeable Democrat who could offer her two cents on the issue, Susan Ginsburg, a firearms policy director at the Treasury Department during the Clinton administration, detailed some successful gun control initiatives over on our Ten Miles Square blog.
