Something I learned from J.J. Cale’s obituary in WaPo is that he changed his public monniker from Johnny to J.J. in order to avoid confusion with the Velvet Underground’s John Cale. I’m a pretty big fan of John Cale, but all in all, I think he should have had to change his name.

* That was fast: first post-“deal” executive-branch nomination, for director of ATF, hangs fire as Senate awaits arrival of Heidi Heitkamp to secure 60th vote for cloture.
* Landing with a THUD: Transportation, Housing and Urban Development appropriations bill pulled from House floor amidst GOP disarray over compliance with Ryan Budget funding levels.
* The Hill releases its latest 50 Most Beautiful list of Washingtonians. I tried to flip through it in search of something interesting, but failed at about number 25.
* At Ten Miles Square, Aaron Carroll makes case that cancer is being overdiagnosed and overtreated, with many negative side effects.
* At College Guide, Daniel Luzer partially endorses North Carolina’s elimination of automatic pay raises for teacher’s earning master’s degrees (the part that involves degrees in education).
And in non-political news:
* Royal prince acquires official nickname of “Georgie.” No word on unofficial nicknames, though Huffpost offers “G-Unit” and “L’il G.”
