Tomorrow afternoon I will join 92,745 close personal friends at the Georgia-LSU game in Athens. I heard a radio sportscaster today predict it would be a “perfect October-like day.” The high temperature will be 79. I seem to recall “perfect October days” being a mite cooler than that, but then again, climate change has all but abolished Autumn and Spring in the South.
Here are some remains of the day.
* Senate rapidly approves “clean CR” on party-line vote (54-44) giving House several days to get its act together on appropriations and/or pass meaningless versions spitting defiance. Interesting detail: CR expires a month earlier than in previous draft (on 11/15 rather than 12/15), perhaps signaling Democratic determination to get rid of sequester.
* HHS formally signs off on Arkansas Medicaid expansion plan that will enroll new beneficiaries in private health plans with Medicaid paying the premiums.
* Jerry Brown signs bill providing overtime pay for domestic workers.
* At Ten Miles Square, Jonathan Bernstein discusses poll showing big majorities of Americans expect totally unlikely inflation in the near future.
* At College Guide, Daniel Luzer sings praises to the idea of tuition-free public colleges, but acknowledges that’s not the way the wind is blowing.
And in non-political news:
* Christmas retailing really is starting crazy early this year.
