I continue to appreciate the indulgence of PA readers and the timely help of Ryan Cooper and Paul Glastris during this difficult period when I’m juggling blog responsibilities with a family medical emergency that will extend into the weekend. I hope to have encouraging news to offer when I return on Monday.
Here are some remains of the day:
* Speaking of the 50th anniversary of the JFK assassination, President Obama says his security is “not something I think about.” He shouldn’t have to.
* At TNR, David Greenberg pushes back on conservative efforts to claim JFK.
* Good news: TPM’s Dylan Scott reports House GOP showing signs of folding on SNAP funding in order to enact farm bill.
* TAP’s Paul Waldman says GOP governors may not be great shakes, but they are superior as national candidates to the current crop in Washington.
* At Ten Miles Square, Rob Atkinson argues that trade and investment deficits must be dealt with if budget deficits are to be meaningfully addressed.
And in non-political news:
* S&P 500 tops 1,800 for first time. Guess the “nuclear option” panic not noticed by markets.
That’s it for this day and week. Martin Longman will be back for Weekend Blogging.
It’s hard for people my age to avoid thinking of the JFK assassination as anything other than as both an echo and a precursor of others. So to close the day, here’s Dion performing “Abraham, Martin and John” on the Smothers Brothers show.

Selah.
