Ah, how blue the Monterey Bay is today! I regret my mother didn’t make one more trip out here; she did love California, and so does her eldest son.
Here are some remains of the day:
* Surprise, surprise: no plans for action on immigration reform in House schedule for June.
* GA’s Republican Attorney General tells its Republican Governor something they both should have already figured out: no, the state cannot amend federal SNAP rules to impose drug testing without risking the entire existence of the program in the state.
* In other shoulda-known-better news, a former Brookyln D.A. (a Democrat) charged with using criminal forfeiture funds to pay his campaign consultants. He lost, BTW.
* And in know-nothing news, Sarah Palin attacks Bowe Bergdahl for allegedly learning native languages while in captivity, instead of “speaking KickAss against those who would destroy the red, white, and blue.”
* At Ten Miles Square, Daniel Luzer offers a “political obituary” for Spanish King Juan Carlos I, who has announced his abdication.
* At College Guide, Robert Kelchen weighs the advantages and risks of creating a national “unit record database” for student demographics, performance, and career outcomes.
And in sorta non-political news:
* Man shows up at Georgia courthouse with guns and bombs, apparently ready to take hostages; wounds deputy sheriff and then is shot dead.
That’s it for Friday. Martin Longman is in for Weekend Blogging. I found another Lennon-Yoko-Zappa performance, but couldn’t bear to listen to it. So let’s go with something else: on this day in 1979, Def Leppard performed the gig in Sheffield that led to their first recording contract. Here they are performing “Armageddon It” in that city in 1993. Classic hair-banditry.

Selah.
