Day’s End and Night Watch

I’ll keep an eye on the primary results tonight, but while I’m at it I’ll read for a third time Paul Glatris’ and Haley Sweetland Edwards’ cover story from the new issue of WaMo about how Congress has steadily disabled itself under Republican leadership from doing the job it was elected to do. You should read it, too. How can any PA reader resist a story headed by pix of Newt Gingrich, John Boehner and Jim DeMint performing a lobotomy beneath the Capitol dome?

Here are some remains of the day:

* At Vox Ezra Klein follows up on what’s happened to the Senate since the “nuclear option” was invoked.

* There’s a big meaty survey out from Brookings/PRRI on immigration policy that also includes fresh numbers on voter “enthusiasm” for 2016.

* At the Atlantic, Derek Thompson takes a pessimistic big-picture look at the commercial viability of digital journalism.

* At Ten Miles Square, Keith Humphreys reiterates the scientific evidence that the AA model works for people with addictions.

* At College Guide, Liz Willen interviews Mississippi’s Dick Molpus, the only elected state elected official ever to apologize for the slaying of civil rights workers James Cheney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner.

And in non-political news:

* Heavy flooding in Brazil’s Parana State kill nine and drive thousands from homes, but reportedly won’t affect World Cup preparations.

That’s it for Tuesday. Let’s close with Howlin’ Wolf performing “Smokestack Lightning” live in 1964. Listening to this, It finally hit me that the Wolf had to be Captain Beefheart’s role model.

Selah.
