On September 27, 2010, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger denounced oil companies Valero, Tesoro and Koch Industries for their efforts to sabotage a landmark 2006 carbon-reduction law via a ballot initiative. The speech generated national attention as an extremely rare example of a Republican politician criticizing the fossil-fuel lobby; the ballot initiative would be defeated on November 2, 2010.
