“I, Donald John Trump, do solemnly swear, that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States…”
Imagine hearing that at noon on January 20, 2017. Just imagine it…and imagine the horror that would come later.
I don’t care what the polls still showing Clinton ahead say. Polls do not vote…and I remain unconvinced that a majority of Americans have truly taken stock of just what it would actually mean to have this man as President of the United States.
Trump has asked African-Americans, “What do you have to lose?” Of course, under a Trump administration, so many Americans of all colors, religions and backgrounds would lose everything–because Trump would steal everything from them.
Trump would steal safety, security and liberty from undocumented immigrants who would be chased out of this country by armed, violent federal agents.
Trump would steal religious freedom from American Muslims, who would be regarded as guilty of aiding and abetting “radical Islam” until proven innocent.
Trump would steal dignity from young black men and women, as his Justice Department would express tacit approval of police brutality inflicted upon communities of color.
Trump would steal wealth from millions of striving Americans; his economic policies would cause a fiscal cataclysm far worse than 2008, one that would siphon money and opportunity from those who have just finally crawled out of the economic hole George W. Bush put them in.
Trump would steal reproductive rights from women; his right-wing appointees to the federal bench would do all within their considerable power to gut the Roe v. Wade decision, bringing us right back to the bloody days of back alleys and coathangers.
Trump would steal innocence from our children, who would be forced to learn the painful lessons of racism, sexism and anti-Semitism far earlier than necessary.
Trump would steal the last vestiges of credibility from the mainstream media, which has already become comfortably numb to his cruelty and nastiness. Does anyone seriously think that the Fourth Estate, which loses control of its functions whenever any wingnut screams “Liberal media bias!”, would do a comprehensive job of covering the sinister choices of a Skinhead-in-Chief?
Trump would steal all traces of reason from our foreign policy. As the old joke goes, Trump is the sort of person who learned everything he knows about foreign policy from going to the International House of Pancakes. The thought of Trump’s bellicosity pushing our world towards nuclear Armageddon is so horrifying, one must conclude that his strongest supporters are incapable of thought, period.
Above all, Trump would steal our standing in the world. Think about it: Trump would be more incompetent than George W. Bush, more dishonest than Ronald Reagan, more scornful of the rules of democracy than Richard Nixon. The least qualified person ever to secure a major party’s nomination for President would effectively turn the White House into an outhouse–and the rest of the world would wonder how we ever allowed this to happen.
It could happen. The theft of the dignity of our fellow citizens could happen. Already, Trump’s Republican minions are trying to steal the right to vote from nearly 1 million Americans in the runup to November 8. What if they are successful?
MSNBC’s Chris Hayes has noted that the worthless website long operated by the man who is now Trump’s campaign CEO has a specific section for “black crime,” presumably as a way to justify racial profiling. Of course, the irony is that it is Trump who ought to be profiled as a menace to society, as he has a long record and fits the description of someone planning to do harm.
“I, Donald John Trump, do solemnly swear…”
I have no idea how Trump will behave if he says those words on January 20. Will his inauguration speech be filled with insults towards President Obama and Hillary Clinton? Will the rowdiness and racial rancor on display in Trump’s infamous rallies also be on display there? No one knows. However, considering what he would do to this country once he’s in power, I can think of an appropriate outfit for him to wear on Inauguration Day: leather gloves and a ski mask.
