Conservatives have come a long way fast in their rhetoric on the Affordable Care Act. Back during the “Defund Obamacare!” crusade, the rap was that once Obamacare took effect, it would be impossible to get rid of it (you know, all those people who’d be dependent on it wouldn’t give it up). So the law had to be stopped before it started or at least killed before fully implemented.
Now, in that petri dish of wingnut sentiment, the 2014 Georgia Republican Senate primary, we’ve got this novel pledge from U.S. Rep. Phil Gingrey:
Hmmm. Gingrey’s “first term” as a Senator wouldn’t end until January 20, 2021. That’s a heap of looting and slavery that would have to go on before the Good Doctor had to come home to Georgia in defeat. Indeed, Gingrey’s House Republican rival in the Senate race, Paul Broun, has claimed that if allowed to take effect Obamacare will “destroy America and everything in America.” I’m not sure whether Broun has divined from his reading of Infallible Scripture if our country’s destruction for the sin of offering affordable health insurance will occur in one, two, six years or more. But I suspect he’s going to say Gingrey’s pledge is way too little, way too late.
