On this day in 2000–sigh–Al Gore conceded the presidential election to George W. Bush after the U.S. Supreme Court shut down the recount in Florida. That day Gore was serenaded at his home by Tom Petty, who performed a song he had earlier demanded that Bush stop using as his own campaign song:
