Have to say, I was a bit embarrassed on the first Earth Day when my high school’s big celebrity speaker was Hal Holbrook, who was starring in some sort of environmentally-themed movie at the time. Now it seems like something from the Age of Pericles.
Here are some final items of the day:
* Headline from National Journal says it all: “Not a Single Republican Has Mentioned Earth Day in Congress Since 2010.” Damn RINO Lamar Alexander did so in July 2010.
* Small contingents of U.S. combat troops being deployed to Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia (150 each) in gesture aimed at Russia.
* Two Christian Right groups release polls showing overwhelming opposition to same-sex marriage among “the base.” Riding the north end of a south-bound brontosaurus often a bad idea.
* At Ten Miles Square, Jonathan Bernstein makes excellent point re Obamacare that voters did not reward Democrats for enacting Medicare in 1966 and subsequent elections.
* At College Guide, Stephen Mihm reminds us that highly selective Ivy League admissions policies (especially efforts to attain “geographical diversity”) originally designed to mitigate “Jewish invasion” of elite campuses.
And in non-political news:
* Courtney Love goes old-school in first new music she’s released since 2010. You know, back when a Republican mentioned Earth Day on the floor of the Senate.
