150 years ago today, General William Tecumsah Sherman “presented” conquered Savannah as the “Christmas present” to President Abraham Lincoln, as the March to the Sea, arguably the deciding blow of the Civil War, concluded and Sherman looked north to Columbia.

Here’s Tennessee Ernie Ford performing “Marching Through Georgia,” a song that was vilified, but still performed, in the Jim Crow Georgia of my childhood.
